Stem Cell Vesicles Revive Blood Vessels in Diabetic Wounds
A research team has developed a stronger form of stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles that helps diabetic wounds rebuild damaged microvessels and heal more effectively. The vesicles were produced from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells grown in a self-feeder layer three-dimensional culture system, which preserved stemness and enhanced regenerative cargo. In cell, mouse, and miniature pig models, the treatment reduced endothelial cell senescence, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction while restoring angiogenesis and improving tissue remodeling. The work identifies impaired protein translation in aging microvascular endothelial cells as a treatable bottleneck and offers a potential cell-free strategy for diabetic foot ulcers, which remain difficult to heal and frequently recur.
