Is the "Autism Epidemic" Real, or Are We Better at Finding It? A Leading Pediatric Developmental Expert Weighs In on New JAMA Study

Dr. Farrell began her fellowship training in 2008, when people were just beginning to notice increasing rates of autism. Over the course of her career, she has observed an increase of patients presenting with concerns about autism, an increase in how frequently she and her colleagues diagnose autism, and an increase in her own ability to detect increasingly subtle cases, particularly in girls. She cites conversations with professional peers in which it is acknowledged that in the 2010s, there were almost certainly diagnoses that they missed, that they would not miss today due to their own changing understanding of how a true diagnosis of autism can manifest. *Dr Farrell is not an author of this study.
